Lifeboat Day, Porthleven

Uh-oh! Normally more elegantly dressed, but apparently shipwrecked overnight, here be Julia of Tombodama Jewellery Studio selling the Porthleven Bag to raise funds for Lifeboat Day, the most vibrant event in our calendar. The jewellery studio gave first prize of a voucher for £200.00 in the Lifeboat Day raffle which raised loads-of-money. Thousands of people crowded into the village to see the superb Penlee Lifeboat close-up, and watch a thrilling air-sea rescue exercise  together with the Culdrose Helicopter.  There were canoe displays, working boat races (with pirates and water cannon), Line-dancing, Morris Men and of course, the Shipwreck/Castaway Competition for local shopkeeperss, which was taken very seriously by Roland's Happy Plaice (yes, it is a fish and chip shop). Murals round the walls,  life-size palm trees, the remains of a camp fire, half a ton of real sand and fantastic costumes wiped out most of the opposition. - Not sure how long it will take to get rid of the sand, there Roland.- Congratulations of course, to the Lifeboat Day Committee who have worked themselves above and beyond the call of duty for many months, to raise substantial funds for this lifeline and give everyone the most wonderful, exciting day out possible.

Oxford meets Porthleven

In June this year the Porthleven bag made a visit to the historic town of Oxford and had a look at the sites and old buildings, this picture was taken outside the famous Christchurch College.

This time the bag was seen watching the great win of Lewis Hamilton at the 2008 British F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone, as you may have heard this was the penultimate time at Silverstone as in 2010 it will move to Donnington Park in Derby.

Porthleven's re-usable shopping bag is going round the world!!

Jona Jones and myself, (Julia Schofield) originally designed the shopping bag to try to reduce this little Cornish Fishing Villages dependence on plastic. We hoped people would use it for shopping, picnics and going to the beach. Now we know people are sending them to friends and relatives round the world as well.

We heard a story the other day of a visitor who took a bag back home to Ireland. When she took it into work a colleagure exclaimed "That's where I was born!" Already we know one's been to the Grand Prix, and another's been sighted near Sydney Opera House. Four have gone to Canada to Cornish Expats.

The image on the bag shows the famous Bickford Smith Institute, known in the village as The Town Clock. (People mistake the landmark for a church though it was built philanthropicallly as a Reading Room). Bay View Terrace is in the background with Budgie's boat sailing out of the harbour (- though we don't think Budgie's recognised it).

It's Lifeboat Day in Porthleven this Sunday. I think we may need a second order!  Julia.

Our First Posting & Sighting

Dear visitors to the Porthleven "where in the World" is our bag blog site.

The idea of this site is to have some fun with an eco. friendly bag that has been design in, and is sold in Porthleven, Cornwall with the aim being for people to email us with their pictures of our bags from around the world.

An example is from my recent trip to Wyoming (thats the Teton Mountains in the background).
